During the second quarter of 2023, the social networking landscape in Kenya saw significant activity across the top five apps. Here’s a closer look at how WhatsApp Messenger, Telegram Messenger, Facebook, Messenger, and Google Meet performed.

WhatsApp Messenger from WhatsApp Inc. maintained a strong presence with weekly downloads peaking at around 214K in mid-April. However, downloads saw a significant dip in June, reaching their lowest at approximately 40K. The app’s weekly revenue remained relatively stable, averaging around $4-$5. Active users hovered around 11M, peaking at 11.9M at the end of June.

Telegram Messenger by Telegram FZ-LLC saw a varied performance. Weekly downloads were highest in mid-April, reaching nearly 50K, but dropped to around 22K in early June. Revenue fluctuated, peaking at $315 in the first week of April. Active users showed a steady increase, reaching over 2.1M by the end of the quarter.

Facebook from Meta Platforms, Inc. experienced a notable decline in weekly downloads, starting at 114K in late March and dropping to around 46K by mid-June. Revenue peaked at $221 in late March but saw a general downward trend, ending at approximately $153 by the end of June. Active users remained relatively stable, with a slight increase to 12.1M by the end of the quarter.

Messenger from Meta Platforms, Inc. had a consistent performance in terms of active users, maintaining around 3.6M throughout the quarter. Downloads saw a decrease from 33K in late March to about 16K in early June. Revenue was minimal, with occasional peaks, such as $15 in the first week of May.

Google Meet by Google had the lowest weekly downloads among the top apps, peaking at around 3.8K in early May and dropping to about 2.2K in early June. Active users showed a slight decline from 649K in late March to 603K by the end of June.
